William Lyttle RIP

He became known as the mole man yet was made to live on the top floor of a tower block. No one knew why. Outside his 20 room detached house the pavement collapsed. Hackney council suspected subsidence. The retired civil engineer had dug a network of tunnels stretching up to 20 metres underground. He was ordered to pay £293,000 to repair the damage. They also found a boat and three renaults buried undergrond in Mortmer Road from where he was evicted. Mr Lyttle never explained why he did his work but the council are still hoping to reclaim there costs from the house he was removed from in 2001.
