Leeds fan Attacks Goaly

I'll lay my cards on the table, I believe Leeds United will be promoted this season. They will scrape their way in to the premier league and, I  imagine will spend a few seasons just trying to stay there. Last night was a reminder of both how Leeds fans bring unwanted trouble and also how hated Leeds are. Dave Jones, the Sheffield Wednesday manager called for Leeds fans to be banned from all away grounds. 'Vile animals, every last one of them' he said of us.
With the internationals break this fixture had trouble written all over it. Wednesday were promoted last year and consider Leeds their worst enemies. Ironically most Leeds fans feel fond of all Yorkshire teams and look over the Pennines to Manchester United for foes. So the two teams hadn't played for a while, a gap in games and an evening Friday night fixture. Sheffield Wednesday began their songs about the two Leeds fans who were murdered in an away fixture against Galatasarie in Turkey. Dave Jones, Wednesday manager was once arrested for child sex allegations though never charged. Leeds fans sang back songs about this and, weirdly 'there's only one Jimmy Savile'. Whether this was intended as further provocation to Jones or support for the deceased Leeds based celebrity paedophile. Either way a nasty atmosphere was brewing.
Wednesday scored first before Leeds equalised to take an away point from a tricky fixture. What made the news was not Leeds football but some idiot running on to the field and pushing Kirkland, the home keeper with both hands causing him to fall over. How the fan was allowed to do this remains a mystery but he has been outed on twitter so no doubt will be punished. The familiar depressing feeling must have been common to many Leeds fans most of whom are a sensible bunch. These are not the seventies when Leeds fans rioted in Paris causing all English teams to be banned from European competition. It had the same feeling that the events in Bournemouth caused in 1990 when thousands of hooligans ran riot. This is another century and these type of occurrences have no place here. Why is it that whenever Leeds threaten a return to the top flight it is accompanied by scandal. Having said all this, it should be pointed out that this could have happened with any team where stewards are at fault in crowd restraint. There isclear relish from the media in the ugly face of Leeds fandom resurfacing. A distinct glee in pointing to Leeds animals. Leeds manager Neil Warnock was quick to disassociate himself from it all.
Football is not really my sport. I support Leeds but not in the way I support Leeds rugby league. In essence Leeds is a rugby league town. The Rhino dominance of super league with a core of players from the surrounding area, now world club champions is the opposite of overpaid outsiders only there for the money that is endemic throughout football. It is this Leeds that represent my home town.
