The Astonishing Hypothesis, as Francis Crick called it, the idea that all our loves, hopes, dreams and fears are the behaviour of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules, for many is still hard to accept. The primary reason people have trouble with this is an illusion they have about what they are. We are not designed to be a computer that can work the truth about itself out. We are designed to survive and self replicate. An important part of our success in survival is not seeing that we are an animal. A meat autonoma. We spin stories to enable and promote our lives. Accepting our material truth contradicts many of our beliefs. But it is through our acceptance that we had no control in the making of our own brains that we can learn to accept that no one is truly responsible for their actions. Free will is an illusion. You can no more take claim for your achievements than you need feel responsible for being born male, female, or indeed born at all. Once we accept that criminals, drug addicts, paedophiles did not choose to be who they are we can go a long way to working out what to do with them. Some have sufficient neuroplasticity to be retrained. Others must be locked away for our safety. But punishment for ones nature, in time, will become like we now regard racism or homophobia.
