We live in a time where manufacturing is carried out overseas or by machines. Human labour is only valued where it can not be replaced. Our work, and this includes furniture makers, is almost entirely for the amusement of other humans. Fine furniture though having the appearance of function is a part of the entertainment industry. To quote John Gray, 'A thriving economy of psychotherapists, designer religions and spiritual boutiques has sprung up. Beyond that there is an enormous grey economy of illegal industries supplying drugs and sex. The function of this new economy, legal and illegal, is to entertain and distract a population, though busier than ever, suspects that it is useless.' Industrialisation created the working class, then made it obsolete, and now threatens to do the same with further societal strata.
