Bi Polarity

Where did the fashion for declaring oneself bi polar come from? The most recent self diagnosis I heard followed the familiar misconception that emotional instability means mental illness. Maybe it has roots in Van Gogh, the troubled genius. Or Stephen Frys' flight and subsequent documentary.
Be careful what you wish for. My experiences of Bi Polarity are not as romantic as others would claim. The psychotic state of manic is similar to what the scizophrenic suffers. There may be a transitional period where great things can be achieved but this can in no way compensate for the utter loss of connection with reality that always concludes the process.
