Leeds 34 Hull KR 16

The champions got off to a winning start to the season in a game that looked unlikely to take place. It was an hour and a half before kick off that the decision was taken to play in severely cold temperatures. Brett Delaney scored the first try of the super league season. Hull KR were in it all the way, benefitting from a penalty count that favoured Leeds, until the final quater when Leeds pulled away. Kevin Sinfield marked his 400th game for the club with his trademark organisational skills and goal kicking. Kallum Watkins who missed last years grand final win due to injury scored a 2nd career hat trick. The celebrations from the Leeds players suggest that this helped to put to bed his disappointment in missing out on the legendary victory at Old Trafford.
