Social Surrealism

Social surrealism is a genre of my own making. It grew from my dissatisfaction with the work of the social realist film makers. I love Kes but what are Shane Meadows and Paddy Considine doing. They both have real talent. This is England stood head and shoulders above other tv work this christmeas, Tyrannosaur was a great film. But why do they spoil it? Irvine Welsh does it too. They begin a world that can compete with middle class worlds of fiction, often more believable. But they're not happy. Before you know it the main character is getting beaten up or violently raped. Isn't this a bit irresponsible. Most social housing estates are pleasent places, they don't all breed alcoholism and insest. Some violence may take place but it seldom is the defining feature. When they aren't being violent there is a tendency to become soppy. How insultuing to northerners intelligence are these twee love on the dole stories.
I am taking it elsewhere. Social Surrealism sees dollism, it sees the pigeon fancier breeding drones to attack middle class joggers who find their way in to the edgelands. I won't give any more away because Welsh or Meadows will steal it.
