The hierarchy of Fingers
To be human there are many survival traits that have evolved that we must resist. The obvious one that comes out in war is the tribalism that is supported by a racism we all have to one degree or another. The life of an English man is worth ten of the enemy. We hear of car bombs killing Iraqis but a single soul of our tribe stirs our heart. Religions give us faith to carry out tribal protection. Our tribe is the chosen people. Hierarchical social systems, class provide a structure that may not benefit the individual but ensure our fighting capacity is maximised. The upper class officers sent our working class boys to certain death at the Somme, on D day. The fingers of a hand have a thumb and a hierarchy of fingers that is stronger, evolved to be do, than a steady spread of digits. Yet these survival traits that have evolved to protect our tribe in times of need reduce our humanity. We must constantly look to ourselves for where they have a detrimental affect socially.
