Leeds were out played today. Warrington played to a plan, each player fulfilled his duties. Mathers three try saving tackles, Hicks hat trick, a well organised defence, a powerful set of forwards and Lee Briers inspired kicking game. Warrington are a small club and no abundance of superstars but organisation and one play maker and a team presenting him with the ball at all crucial times. I am happy for Warrington who have waited many years to enjoy these days of glory. I am particularly happy for Lee Briers who has been a fantastic player throughout his career and deserved todays Lance Todd trophy. I wouldnt back against them for the double.
Leeds never clicked together and a team of brilliant individuals couldn't gel. With Sinfield, Burrows and MaGuire, all capable of leading play can prove an embarrassment of riches. We could argue that having two props out, particularly Peacock, a couple of decisions not going our way but this would be sour grapes. The game wasn't an attractive one for the newcomer, bar Leeds first 5 minutes that showed just why this is The Greatest Game of all, that Warrington played the percentages, Australian style and the champagne rugby Leeds are capable of, seen no where else in team sport just wasn't to be today. Congratulations Warrington, you deserve it.
